Business Planning and Goal Setting: How to Set Business Goals That Actually Work

Setting goals is easy. Sticking to them — and actually achieving meaningful results — is where the real challenge begins. If you're an entrepreneur, freelancer, or part of a small team, you know how quickly daily demands can pull your attention away from your bigger vision.

At ThriveCo, we believe in working smarter, not just harder. Our coworking members are focused, ambitious people building businesses and brands with purpose — and we see every day how goal setting, done right, can be a powerful driver of success.

Here’s how to set business goals that actually work — and how a space like ThriveCo can support you every step of the way.

1. Start With Reflection

Before you plan forward, take a moment to look back. What’s worked for you in the past? What hasn’t? Whether you’re launching a new product, growing your client base, or building a more sustainable routine, self-awareness is the first step to setting better goals.

Try asking yourself:

  • What are 2–3 accomplishments I'm proud of?

  • Where did I lose momentum?

  • What changes could improve my process moving forward?

A little reflection creates a lot of clarity.

2. Keep Goals S.M.A.R.T. — and Focused

S.M.A.R.T. stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound — and it’s a proven way to cut through vague intentions.

Unfocused: “Grow my business.”
Clear: “Gain 5 new clients in the next 8 weeks.”

Better yet, limit yourself to 1–3 core goals at a time. Overloading your to-do list leads to burnout, not breakthroughs.

3. Break It Down Into Action Steps

A goal without a plan is just a wish. Break your big objectives into smaller, trackable actions — daily, weekly, or monthly. For example:

Goal: Launch a new product.
Action Steps:

  • Research 3 competitors this week

  • Finalize packaging next week

  • Schedule launch emails by [insert deadline]

When you know the next step, progress feels doable — and that’s where momentum builds.

4. Build In Accountability

Staying on track is a lot easier when you’re not doing it alone. Find ways to share your goals with someone else — whether it’s a business partner, mentor, or another ThriveCo member.

Try:

  • Weekly accountability check-ins

  • A public whiteboard with your top 3 goals

  • Co-working with someone who's also building something big

Community support can be the difference between stalling out and leveling up.

5. Celebrate the Small Wins

Goal setting isn’t just about what you achieve — it’s about how you grow. Celebrate progress, not just perfection. A new client, a productive day, or showing up consistently all deserve recognition.

At ThriveCo, we know how important it is to celebrate your momentum. Progress is what keeps entrepreneurs going — so take a moment to appreciate how far you've come.

Set Goals That Stick — and Build a Business That Thrives

Whether you’re planning for a new project or mapping out long-term growth, effective goal setting starts with intention. And when you're surrounded by the right people and energy, it's even easier to stay on track.

Private Office, Dedicated Desk, or Coworking? What’s Right for You?

As the way we work continues to evolve, so do our workspace needs. At ThriveCo, we understand that one size doesn’t fit all—which is why we offer a variety of flexible workspace solutions designed to fit your unique work style, business needs, and budget.

Whether you're a solo entrepreneur, a growing team, or a remote worker seeking structure, choosing between a private office, a dedicated desk, or a coworking membership can feel overwhelming. Let’s break down the differences so you can confidently find the setup that helps you thrive.

🏢 Private Office: Your Own Four Walls

Best for: Small teams, consultants, founders, or anyone who needs confidentiality and focus.

A private office at ThriveCo gives you your own fully furnished space behind a locked door. It’s perfect for those who need a quiet, professional environment or frequently meet with clients. You get the best of both worlds: complete privacy when you need it and access to a vibrant community when you don’t.

What you get:

  • A fully enclosed, secure office space

  • 24/7 access to ThriveCo

  • Access to all shared amenities (kitchen, meeting rooms, lounge)

  • A professional business address in the St. Louis area

  • Customizable layout options for your team

Ideal for: Lawyers, therapists, startups, and remote executives.

💼 Dedicated Desk: Your Personal HQ Within a Shared Space

Best for: Freelancers, remote workers, creatives, or anyone who likes consistency.

With a dedicated desk, you get your own workstation in a shared office area. Unlike hot desks, your space is always yours—set it up once, and it's ready every day. You’ll enjoy the structure of a routine while still being part of a collaborative, open environment.

What you get:

  • Your own desk, chair, and storage in a shared space

  • 24/7 access

  • Access to meeting rooms and ThriveCo amenities

  • A quiet, consistent workspace with a community vibe

Ideal for: Designers, writers, developers, and solo consultants.

☕ Coworking Membership: Flexibility at Its Finest

Best for: Remote workers, digital nomads, part-timers, or anyone who prefers variety.

Coworking memberships at ThriveCo offer flexible, drop-in access to our shared workspaces. Choose where you work each day—by the window, near the coffee machine, or in a quiet corner. It's the most affordable and flexible option, perfect if you don't need a fixed desk.

What you get:

  • Access during business hours or 24/7 (depending on plan)

  • Use of any open desk in the common areas

  • Fast Wi-Fi, hot coffee, and community events

  • A built-in network of fellow professionals

Ideal for: Side hustlers, consultants on the go, and anyone escaping the home-office blues.

Which One’s Right for You?

Here are a few quick questions to help you decide:

  • Do you take client calls or need privacy? → Private Office

  • Do you want your own setup in a shared space? → Dedicated Desk

  • Do you want flexibility and a social vibe? → Coworking Membership

No matter where you land, ThriveCo has a space that can evolve with your needs. And if you're still unsure, we’d love to invite you in for a tour so you can see the spaces, meet the community, and find your perfect fit.

Benefits of Utilizing a Virtual Office for Your Business

If you and your team primarily work from home, having an office or a conference room available in a coworking space is beneficial for a multitude of reasons: you can keep your work and home life separate, and you have the privacy you need to protect your and any client information. You also have one physical address for your whole team to receive work-related mail; you have a physical address to put on your business cards, which makes you more reputable; and, possibly most importantly, you have space to meet with clients. Yes, you can meet clients and potential employees in a coffee shop or other location, but being able to meet in a place that is yours gives both you and your client confidence.

If you are interested in a Virtual Office for your business, we are offering tours of the new mail room. Schedule your tour today!
